1. The Savings Plan

I decided it was time to start saving money, so I created a strict monthly budget.

I wrote down my income, listed my expenses, and calculated exactly how much I could save.

I felt proud.

Then I went shopping and saw a jacket I liked.

I checked the price.

It was expensive.

I walked away.

Then I thought, “I'm saving money now. I deserve a little reward.”

So I bought the jacket.

When I got home, I looked at my budget.

My savings plan was still there.

My savings, however, were not.

Apparently, I had confused “saving money” with “saving money for later spending.”

2. The Free Delivery

I was ordering something online when I noticed the website offered free delivery if I spent a little more.

My order was just below the required amount.

So I added something small to qualify for free delivery.

Then I saw another item I liked.

I added that too.

By the time I finished shopping, my order was almost twice what I originally planned to spend.

But at least I didn't pay for delivery.

I proudly told my friend, “I saved money!”

He looked at my receipt.

“You spent twice as much.”

“Yes,” I said.

“But I didn't pay for shipping.”

He stared at me.

I stared back.

We both knew I had won the argument and lost the mathematics.

3. The Emergency Fund

I decided to build an emergency fund, so I put some money aside and promised myself I wouldn't touch it unless something genuinely important happened.

A few weeks later, I saw a great deal on my favorite headphones.

I told myself, “This isn't an emergency.”

I closed the website.

Ten minutes later, I opened it again.

“Still not an emergency.”

Another ten minutes passed.

I bought the headphones.

Then I looked at my bank account and felt guilty.

My friend asked, “Why did you use your emergency fund?”

I said, “I didn't.”

He pointed at the headphones.

I said, “Technically, the emergency was that I didn't own these headphones.”

He shook his head.

I smiled.

“It's important to be prepared.”
