1. The Weather App

Before leaving home, I checked the weather app.

It said there was a 2% chance of rain.

I looked outside.

Perfectly clear sky.

I thought, “Today is going to be beautiful.”

Ten minutes later, I was standing outside in the middle of a downpour.

I checked the app again.

It still said 2%.

I stared at my phone and said, “You had one job.”

The app updated.

3% chance of rain.

Apparently, even the weather forecast was trying to avoid taking responsibility.

2. The Umbrella

I always carry an umbrella because I'm determined to be prepared.

One afternoon, dark clouds appeared, so I proudly opened my umbrella before the rain even started.

A man walking past looked at me strangely.

I said, “It's going to rain.”

He looked up at the perfectly dry sky.

“Are you sure?”

“Absolutely.”

Five minutes passed.

No rain.

Ten minutes.

Still nothing.

Eventually, the clouds disappeared completely.

I folded up my umbrella and continued walking.

Then a bird flew overhead.

It dropped something directly onto my umbrella.

I looked at the umbrella.

Then I looked at the sky.

I sighed.

“Fine,” I said. “Technically, I was right about something falling.”

3. The Hot Day

It was incredibly hot, so I decided to stay indoors and avoid the sun.

I closed the curtains, turned on the fan, drank plenty of water, and sat comfortably on the sofa.

After an hour, I felt much better.

Then the electricity went out.

The fan stopped.

The air conditioner stopped.

The lights went off.

I opened the curtains to see if there was a breeze outside.

There wasn't.

The sun was shining directly through the window like it had been waiting for this moment.

I looked at the ceiling and said, “Okay, you win.”

Five minutes later, I was sitting outside with a cold drink.

Sometimes the best way to beat the heat is to stop trying to negotiate with it.
