I was texting my friend to say, “I’m running late, but I’ll be there soon.”
Autocorrect decided to improve my message.
It changed it to: “I’m running late, but I’ll be there soup.”
My friend replied, “Should I order you some?”
I said, “No, I meant soon.”
Autocorrect changed my next message to: “No, I meant spoon.”
At that point, I stopped texting.
Apparently, technology had decided I was opening a restaurant.
2. The Smart Speaker
I bought a smart speaker because I wanted my home to feel more futuristic.
The first morning, I said, “Play some relaxing music.”
It started playing heavy metal.
I said, “Stop.”
It turned the volume up.
I said, “Please stop.”
It turned the volume up again.
Finally, I unplugged it.
The speaker went silent.
I stood there proudly and said, “See? I knew I was smarter than you.”
Then I realized I had been arguing with a machine for five minutes before remembering that it had a power cable.
3. The Password Reset
I tried to log into an old account, but I couldn’t remember my password.
I clicked “Forgot Password?”
The website asked me a security question:
“What was the name of your first pet?”
Easy.
I entered the answer.
Incorrect.
I tried again.
Still incorrect.
After several attempts, I suddenly remembered the problem.
My first pet was a goldfish.
I had apparently named it Goldfish.
The website wasn’t testing my memory.
It was testing whether I had ever put any effort into naming things.
