Simple Errands, Complicated Results

 

1. The Quick Car Wash

I decided to wash my car because it was looking a little dirty.

I figured it would take about 20 minutes.

I got the bucket, soap, sponge, and hose, and started washing.

Halfway through, I noticed some dirt on the wheels, so I decided to clean those properly too.

Then I saw a few marks on the windows.

Then I noticed the headlights looked cloudy.

Before long, I was polishing the tires and wiping down parts of the engine.

Two hours later, I stepped back to admire my work.

The car looked great.

Then I looked at myself.

I was soaked, covered in soap, and standing in a puddle.

My neighbor walked over and said, “You really gave that car a good wash.”

I nodded proudly.

“Thanks. Now I just need to figure out how to get myself clean without taking another two hours.”

2. The Simple Phone Call

I needed to make a quick phone call to ask someone a simple question.

I expected the conversation to take about two minutes.

They answered, and before I could ask my question, they said, “How have you been?”

I said, “I'm good. How about you?”

They told me about their week.

I told them about mine.

Somehow, we started discussing someone's new job.

That led to a story about an old colleague.

Then we remembered something funny that happened years ago.

Thirty minutes later, neither of us had mentioned the reason for my call.

Finally, there was an awkward silence.

I said, “Actually, the reason I called was…”

They interrupted.

“Oh! I completely forgot why we were talking.”

I laughed.

“So did I.”

3. The One Item

I was cleaning out my desk and found an old pen.

It didn't work anymore, but I couldn't bring myself to throw it away.

I thought, “I'll test it one more time.”

I scribbled on a piece of paper.

Nothing.

I scribbled harder.

Still nothing.

I shook it.

Nothing.

I tapped it against the desk.

Still nothing.

At this point, throwing it away should have been the obvious solution.

Instead, I took it apart to see if I could fix it.

Twenty minutes later, I had tiny pieces of pen scattered across my desk and absolutely no idea how to put them back together.

I stared at the mess and realized something.

The pen had been useless before I started.

Now the pen was useless and I had created a new problem.

I put all the pieces into the trash.

Then I found another old pen.

Apparently, cleaning my desk is just my way of creating more reasons to avoid cleaning my desk.
