Devotional Message
There are moments when starting again feels both exciting and uncertain.
You may have been given another opportunity to rebuild something important. Perhaps a season of failure has passed, circumstances have changed, or God has opened a door to begin again. In such moments, one question matters greatly: How should we begin?
Israel faced that question after returning from exile.
Ezra 3 describes a people who had returned to Jerusalem after years of captivity. Their city had been devastated, the temple had been destroyed, and much of what had once represented their national life and worship had been lost.
Yet their return was not simply about rebuilding a city.
It was about returning to God.
And when they began to worship again, they did not simply decide what seemed appropriate to them. They read the instructions God had already given and obeyed them.
That is the central truth of Ezra 3:4–6:
God’s people are called to order their worship and obedience according to His Word, even when they are rebuilding after a difficult season.
They Did Not Invent Their Own Way
Ezra tells us that the Israelites celebrated the Festival of Tabernacles “in accordance with what is written.”
That small phrase is important.
The people had just experienced enormous disruption. They could have approached their worship according to their emotions, circumstances, or personal preferences. Instead, they looked back to what God had commanded.
Their circumstances had changed.
God’s instructions had not.
The people were rebuilding, but they were not starting from nothing. God had already spoken.
The Feast of Tabernacles was one of Israel's appointed festivals, established in the Law given through Moses. It reminded Israel of God's provision and their dependence upon Him. In this setting, its observance was especially significant: the returned exiles were beginning again as a covenant people, and they did so by paying attention to what God had written.
Then Ezra says that they also offered the regular burnt offerings required for each day, along with the offerings required for the New Moon and the other appointed festivals.
The repeated emphasis is clear: their worship was shaped by God's instructions.
Obedience Matters Especially When We Begin Again
There is something deeply instructive here for anyone walking through a new beginning.
When life changes, our temptation can be to improvise spiritually.
We may think, “Things are different now, so perhaps I need a completely different approach.”
But Ezra 3 reminds us that a new season does not give us permission to abandon God's instructions.
The returned Israelites were living in different circumstances from those of previous generations. Their temple had not yet been rebuilt. Their city was still in ruins. There was much work ahead.
Yet before everything was restored, they returned to what God had already commanded.
That principle reaches into ordinary Christian life.
When you do not know what to do next, God's Word should not become less important because your circumstances are complicated. It becomes even more important.
When you are making a difficult decision, Scripture should help shape your choices.
When you are rebuilding your spiritual life, Scripture should guide your steps.
When your emotions are strong, God's Word remains a trustworthy standard.
When the future is uncertain, obedience does not require that you understand everything. It requires that you take seriously what God has already said.
The Altar Came Before the Finished Temple
One of the striking details in the surrounding passage is that the altar was restored before the temple itself was completed.
That matters.
The people did not wait until everything looked beautiful before they returned to the worship of God.
The rebuilding project was unfinished, but their obedience could begin.
There is a practical lesson here.
You may not have every part of your life in order. You may still be rebuilding after disappointment. You may not know exactly what the next months will look like. There may be unfinished areas of your life that concern you.
But obedience does not have to wait until everything is perfect.
The Israelites could worship while the temple remained unfinished.
Likewise, you can obey God today even while some parts of your life are still being rebuilt.
Read what He has said.
Take the next faithful step.
Let His Word shape the way forward.
Read the Instructions Before You Build
Imagine someone assembling something complicated without looking at the instructions.
At first, everything may seem to be going well. The pieces appear to fit. Progress seems visible.
Then eventually something does not work.
A piece is missing. Something has been placed in the wrong position. The person has to stop and begin correcting what could have been avoided by simply following the instructions from the beginning.
Our spiritual lives can become like that when we try to build according to our own ideas.
God's Word is not an unnecessary restriction placed on our lives. It reveals the way God calls His people to live.
Ezra 3 shows us a people who had every reason to feel overwhelmed by what lay ahead. Yet they did not begin by creating their own pattern for worship.
They read the instructions.
And then they obeyed.
Christ-Centered Perspective
Ezra 3 ultimately sits within the larger biblical story of God's faithfulness to His covenant people.
The returned exiles were learning again to live as a people ordered around the worship of God. Their obedience did not represent the final fulfilment of God's redemptive work, but it formed part of the story that leads toward Christ.
Jesus came as the true and greater fulfilment toward which the Old Testament Scriptures point. Through Him, God's people are brought into relationship with God not by inventing their own way of approaching Him, but through God's gracious provision.
Christ Himself also demonstrated complete submission to the Father's will. His life was not governed by human convenience or personal preference. He came to do the Father's will and fulfilled the Scriptures in His life and ministry.
Therefore, reading God's Word and obeying it is not merely about following religious instructions.
It is about learning to live under the gracious rule of the God who has revealed Himself and who has ultimately made Himself known to us in Jesus Christ.
What Does This Mean for You Today?
Perhaps you are facing a decision.
Before asking only, “What do I want?” ask, “What has God said?”
Perhaps you are rebuilding your prayer life, your relationships, your priorities, or your daily habits.
Before trying every new idea, return to Scripture.
Perhaps you are entering a season you have never experienced before.
You may not have instructions for every individual circumstance, but you have God's revealed Word to shape your character, priorities, relationships, worship, and choices.
You do not need to know the entire road before taking the next step.
You need to be willing to obey what God has already made clear.
And when Scripture does not give a specific answer to a particular decision, its wisdom still teaches you how to approach that decision—with humility, honesty, love, holiness, wisdom, and dependence upon God.
The returned exiles had much rebuilding ahead of them.
But they began by remembering that worship was not something they could simply redesign according to their circumstances.
God had spoken, and they were called to listen.
Encouragement for the Soul
You do not have to invent the path of faithful living by yourself.
When your circumstances are changing and the future feels uncertain, return to what God has already said. His Word gives you a trustworthy foundation on which to take the next step.
You may still have unfinished things in your life, just as Jerusalem's restoration was still incomplete. But you can obey God today.
Read the instructions. Trust the One who gave them. Take the next faithful step.

Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for Your Word and for Your faithfulness to Your people. Thank You that when the Israelites returned from exile and began rebuilding, they did not have to create their own pattern of worship. Your instructions had already been given, and they chose to follow what You had written.
Teach me to have that same posture of obedience.
When my circumstances change, keep me from treating Your Word as though it has become less important. When I am uncertain about what to do, help me return to what You have already revealed. Give me humility to listen, wisdom to understand, and grace to obey.
Help me not to wait until everything in my life is complete before I begin walking faithfully with You. Where there is rebuilding, help me take the next obedient step according to Your Word.
Keep my worship centred on You rather than on my preferences. And as I follow You, help me remember that Your ultimate provision for drawing near to You is found in Jesus Christ.
May my life increasingly reflect a heart that listens to Your Word and responds with faithful obedience.
