Devotional Message: Jesus Reigns, and His Mission Continues

When Jesus Ascended, His Work Did Not End

Have you ever watched someone you depended on leave, knowing that you would have to continue without their physical presence? Perhaps it was a parent, a teacher, a mentor, or someone whose guidance had become an important part of your life. Their departure might have left you wondering how you would manage without them.

Imagine, then, what the disciples must have felt when they watched Jesus ascend into heaven.

For years, they had walked with Him, listened to His teaching, witnessed His miracles, and experienced His compassion. They had seen Him crucified, but they had also encountered Him alive after His resurrection. Now, after spending time with their risen Lord, they were watching Him leave their sight.

Yet the ascension was not a moment of defeat, abandonment, or uncertainty about Christ's authority. It was a significant moment in God's redemptive work. Jesus was returning to the Father, and His followers were being prepared to continue the mission He had entrusted to them.

This passage reminds us of one essential truth: Jesus has ascended and reigns in heaven, but His work continues through His followers until He returns.

The Risen Christ Had More to Say

Acts begins by connecting the events of Jesus' earthly ministry with the continuing work of the early church.

In the opening verses, Luke reminds Theophilus that his earlier account, the Gospel of Luke, described what Jesus began to do and teach until He was taken up into heaven.

This connection is important. Acts is not an unrelated story about a group of believers attempting to establish a religious movement. It is the continuation of the story of Jesus Christ and His work through those who belong to Him.

After His resurrection, Jesus appeared to His disciples over a period of forty days. He gave them convincing evidence that He was alive and spoke to them about the kingdom of God.

His resurrection was not a rumour, a symbolic experience, or something the disciples simply wanted to believe. They had encountered the risen Lord.

Jesus also instructed them not to leave Jerusalem but to wait for the promised gift of the Father: the Holy Spirit.

He explained that John had baptised with water, but they would soon be baptised with the Holy Spirit.

This instruction teaches us something important about the mission ahead. The disciples were not expected to accomplish Christ's work through their own strength, determination, or abilities. They needed what God had promised to give them.

Before they could go forward, they had to receive the power God would provide.

The Ascension Revealed the Authority of Jesus

As the disciples gathered with Jesus, they asked whether He was about to restore the kingdom to Israel.

Their question reflected their expectations about God's kingdom and Israel's restoration. They were still trying to understand the timing and nature of what God was doing.

Jesus did not give them a date or satisfy their curiosity about the times and seasons established by the Father's authority.

Instead, He directed their attention towards the responsibility before them.

He told them that they would receive power when the Holy Spirit came upon them and that they would be His witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.

This was a significant change in perspective.

The disciples were concerned about when certain events would happen, but Jesus directed them towards what they were called to do.

They were not being asked to control God's timetable. They were being commissioned to testify about the risen Christ.

Then something extraordinary happened.

While Jesus was speaking, He was lifted up before their eyes, and a cloud hid Him from their sight.

In the biblical account, the cloud carries the significance of God's presence and glory. Jesus' ascension was not simply an ordinary departure into the sky. It marked His return to the Father's presence and the beginning of His heavenly reign.

The One who had humbled Himself, suffered, died, and risen from the grave was now exalted.

His earthly ministry had reached its appointed conclusion, but His authority and work had not ended.

The disciples could no longer see Him as they once had, but that did not mean He had ceased to be Lord.

This is the heart of the ascension: Jesus is not absent in the sense of being defeated or powerless. He reigns, and His mission continues.

Do Not Spend Your Life Looking at the Sky

After Jesus ascended, the disciples remained gazing into heaven.

Perhaps they were overwhelmed by what they had witnessed. They had just watched their Lord disappear from their sight, and they were still trying to take in the significance of the moment.

Then two men dressed in white appeared beside them.

They asked why the disciples were standing there looking into the sky. They reminded them that Jesus, who had been taken into heaven, would return in the same way they had seen Him go.

This statement offered the disciples an assurance that would shape their understanding of the future.

Jesus would return.

His ascension was not the final separation between Christ and His people. His return was part of the promise they were to hold on to.

However, the disciples were not meant to spend their lives doing nothing but looking upwards. They had received a commission, and the promised Holy Spirit would empower them to fulfil it.

Their attention needed to move from watching Jesus depart to faithfully carrying out what He had commanded.

The same truth speaks to us today.

It is possible to become so occupied with questions about the future that we neglect the responsibility God has placed before us. We may spend so much time wondering when certain things will happen that we overlook the opportunities to serve Christ faithfully today.

The disciples were not given every answer about the future. They were given a clear responsibility in the present.

Christ's Mission Continues Through Faithful Witnesses

The ascension reminds us that the Christian faith is centred on a living and reigning Saviour.

We do not follow someone whose story ended at the cross. We follow Jesus Christ, who died, rose again, ascended into heaven, and promised to return.

His followers were commissioned to be witnesses of Him. Their responsibility was to testify to what they had seen and heard, beginning in Jerusalem and extending to the ends of the earth.

That mission was not limited to the original disciples. The book of Acts shows how the message of Christ spread through the power of the Holy Spirit and the faithful witness of believers.

As Christians today, we are also called to represent Christ through our words and conduct.

Being a witness does not mean having an answer to every difficult question. It means faithfully pointing people towards Jesus.

It may happen when you speak honestly about your faith, explain the hope you have in Christ, encourage someone with the truth of God's Word, or demonstrate Christlike character in your relationships.

It may also mean refusing to compromise your Christian convictions when doing so would be easier.

You may never stand before a large crowd or travel to another country to preach the gospel. Nevertheless, the people around you should have opportunities to encounter the message of Christ through your faithful testimony.

Your workplace, family, friendships, and everyday interactions can become places where you demonstrate what it means to belong to Jesus.

But remember that this mission is not dependent on your natural abilities alone. Jesus promised His disciples the power of the Holy Spirit. Their calling came with God's provision.

Therefore, do not approach Christian witness as though everything depends on your personal strength. Depend on the Holy Spirit, remain faithful to Scripture, and allow your life and words to point others towards Christ.

The Promise of His Return Gives Us Confidence

The passage ends with a promise that Jesus will return.

This is not presented as an invitation to speculation or endless arguments about dates and predictions. It is an assurance that the ascended Christ will come again.

The disciples had witnessed His departure, and they were given the assurance of His return.

For believers, this truth provides a reason to remain faithful even when the work of following Christ becomes difficult.

There may be times when your efforts seem unnoticed. You may share God's Word and see little immediate response. You may faithfully serve others without receiving appreciation. You may encounter opposition because of your commitment to Christ.

Yet the ascended Jesus remains Lord.

Your responsibility is not to determine when He will return or control how quickly His mission progresses. Your responsibility is to remain faithful to Him while you have the opportunity.

The promise of His return reminds us that our present work is not meaningless and that the story of Christ's kingdom is moving towards the fulfilment of God's purpose.

We must not allow discouragement, distraction, or uncertainty about tomorrow to make us neglect the calling we have received today.

Conclusion: Live for the Christ Who Reigns

The ascension of Jesus changed how the disciples understood His presence and their responsibility.

Although they could no longer walk beside Him as they had during His earthly ministry, they were not left without direction. They had His commission, the promise of the Holy Spirit, and the assurance that He would return.

The same risen and ascended Christ remains the centre of our faith today.

We are not called to stand still, overwhelmed by what has happened or distracted by what may happen in the future. We are called to live faithfully under the authority of Jesus and bear witness to Him wherever God has placed us.

So, as you begin this new day, remember that Jesus reigns. His work continues, His promise remains, and His mission deserves our faithfulness.

Do not lose sight of the Saviour who ascended. Live faithfully for the Christ who reigns, and remain ready for His promised return.

Encouragement for the Soul

You may not see Jesus with your physical eyes, but His ascension does not mean He has lost His authority or abandoned His mission. He is the risen and exalted Lord, and His promise to return remains sure.

You do not have to accomplish His work through your own strength. The Holy Spirit empowers believers to bear witness to Christ. Whatever your circumstances today, remain faithful to the Saviour and let your life point others towards Him.

The King who ascended will return. Until then, keep living for Him.

Reflection and Reflection Question

The disciples were directed away from simply watching Jesus ascend and towards the responsibility of becoming His witnesses.

Am I faithfully representing Jesus Christ through my words, choices, and daily conduct, or have distractions and concerns about the future caused me to neglect the responsibility He has placed before me today?

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for Your Word and for the truth revealed through the ascension of Your Son, Jesus Christ. Thank You that Jesus did not remain in the grave but rose again and ascended into heaven.

Thank You that His ascension was not the end of His work but the declaration of His heavenly authority. Help me to live with the understanding that Jesus Christ reigns and that His mission continues through those who believe in Him.

Lord, forgive me for the times I have allowed distractions, uncertainty, or unnecessary concerns about the future to take my attention away from the responsibility You have placed before me.

Teach me to be a faithful witness of Jesus in my everyday life. Let my words reflect His truth, my actions demonstrate His character, and my conduct bring honour to His name.

Give me the courage to speak about Christ when opportunities arise. Help me to depend on the Holy Spirit rather than relying only on my own abilities. May I never become discouraged when the results of my efforts are not immediately visible.

Father, strengthen my faith in the promise of Christ's return. Help me to remain faithful, watchful, and committed to His mission until the day He comes again.

And Lord, I also pray for everyone who shares this devotional. May You use their willingness to share Your Word to encourage hearts, strengthen the faith of other believers, and lead those who do not yet know Jesus towards Him. Let the message of the risen and ascended Christ reach people who need to hear the truth of Your salvation.

May every life touched by this message be encouraged to live faithfully for Jesus, our reigning Lord and coming King.

I pray all these things in the mighty name of Jesus Christ.

Amen.

Final Blessing

May the Lord strengthen your faith, empower your witness, and keep your heart steadfast in Christ. May your life point others towards the risen and ascended Saviour as you faithfully await His return.
