The dog looked at the door, then looked back at Peter.

Peter sighed.

2. The Cat's Schedule
Laura's cat had a very strict daily routine.
At 6:00 a.m., it woke Laura by walking across her face.
At 7:00, it demanded breakfast.
At 8:00, it sat beside the window.
At noon, it took a nap.
At 5:00 p.m., it demanded dinner.
And at 10:00 p.m., it suddenly decided the entire house needed to hear it running around.
One evening, Laura's friend asked, “Does your cat ever let you decide what happens?”
Laura laughed.
“Of course.”
“Really?”
“Yes. Every morning, I get to decide whether I'm going to obey it immediately or after it wakes me up three times.”
Her friend smiled.
“So basically, the cat runs the house.”
Laura looked toward the cat.
The cat stared back.
Laura lowered her voice.
“Don't say that too loudly. It already knows.”
3. The Expensive Bed
Mark bought his dog a beautiful new bed.
It was soft, comfortable, and cost more than he wanted to admit.
When he brought it home, the dog sniffed it.
Mark smiled.
“You're going to love this.”
The dog walked around the bed.
Then he walked away.
Mark called him back.
“Come on. Try it.”
The dog ignored him and jumped onto the sofa.
Mark frowned.
“You have a brand-new bed!”
The dog looked at him from the sofa.
Mark moved the bed closer.
The dog moved farther away.
Finally, Mark gave up.
That night, he found the dog sleeping peacefully on the floor beside the expensive bed.
He shook his head.
“I spent all that money for nothing.”
The dog opened one eye.
Mark sighed.
“Fine. I'll sleep in the bed.”
The dog stood up and immediately climbed onto it.
Mark stared.
“So that's what this was about.”
The dog settled down comfortably.
Mark laughed.
“Apparently, I bought you a bed so I could earn permission to use it.”
