Mark was convinced his dog, Buddy, understood every word he said.
One morning, he decided to test this theory.

Buddy immediately sat.
“Good boy! Now, if you understand me, give me your paw.”
Buddy lifted his paw.
Mark was delighted. “Amazing! One more test. Go and bring me my slippers.”
Buddy ran into the bedroom and returned with one slipper.
Mark laughed. “You only brought one. Where's the other one?”
Buddy wagged his tail and dropped the slipper at Mark's feet.
Mark pointed toward the bedroom.
“Go back and get the other one!”
Buddy looked at him, turned around, and walked straight to his bed.
Mark followed him, shaking his head.
“You understood everything else. Why won't you get my other slipper?”
His wife, who had been watching from the kitchen, called out, “Maybe he understands you perfectly. Perhaps he just doesn't agree with your priorities.”
Mark looked at Buddy, who had already closed his eyes.
For the first time, Mark wondered whether his dog was training him instead.
2. The Cat and the Expensive Bed
Sophie had just bought her cat, Oliver, a beautiful new bed.
It was soft, comfortable, and designed specifically for cats. She had spent more money on it than she cared to admit.
When she placed it beside the sofa, Oliver sniffed it, circled it twice, and walked away.
Sophie tried everything to encourage him. She put his favourite blanket inside, added a toy, and even sprinkled a little catnip around the edges.
Oliver inspected the bed once more before settling down inside an empty cardboard box.
Sophie stared at him.
“I bought you a lovely bed, and you'd rather sleep in a box?”
Oliver stretched comfortably and closed his eyes.
The next morning, Sophie decided to remove the box.
Surely, without the box, Oliver would finally appreciate his new bed.
Instead, he climbed onto the kitchen table and fell asleep on a folded newspaper.
Sophie sighed and called her friend.
“My cat refuses to sleep in the expensive bed I bought him. What should I do?”
Her friend laughed.
“Put the bed inside the cardboard box.”
Sophie paused.
“Why would that work?”
“Because, Sophie, you've bought a cat a bed. What he really wanted was the box it came in.”
3. The Dog Who Hated Bath Time
Every Saturday, Rachel gave her golden retriever, Max, a bath.
Max loved running through the garden, splashing in puddles, and rolling around in the grass. But the moment Rachel mentioned bath time, he suddenly became the most difficult dog in the neighbourhood.
One Saturday, Rachel walked into the living room carrying a towel.
“Max, bath time!”
Max immediately disappeared.
Rachel checked under the sofa, behind the curtains, and inside the laundry room.
Finally, she found him hiding behind the shower curtain in the bathroom.
She laughed.
“Max, you can't hide in the bathroom to avoid a bath!”
Max looked up at her with the saddest expression she had ever seen.
Rachel felt guilty for a moment, but she carried him to the tub and started washing him.
Twenty minutes later, Max was clean, fluffy, and smelling wonderful.
Rachel smiled proudly.
“See? That wasn't so bad, was it?”
Max shook himself vigorously, spraying water all over her clothes.
Then he ran straight outside and rolled in the mud.
Rachel stood at the back door, dripping wet, watching him happily destroy all her hard work.
Her husband walked past, took one look at her, and asked, “Didn't you just give him a bath?”
Rachel nodded silently.
Her husband watched Max roll in the mud again.
“Well,” he said, “at least one of you enjoyed it.”
