A father was getting ready for a family dinner and decided to wear a new shirt.
He walked into the living room and asked his young daughter, “How do I look?”

“You look nice, Daddy.”
The father smiled.
“Thank you! Do you really like my shirt?”
She nodded.
“Yes.”
He proudly walked toward the door.
Then she added, “It makes your stomach look smaller.”
The father stopped.
His wife started laughing.

“Was that supposed to be a compliment?”

He looked down at his shirt.

2. The Homework Problem
Little Daniel was sitting at the kitchen table, staring at his homework.
His mother walked over.
“What's wrong?”
“I don't understand this question.”
She looked at the worksheet.
“It says, ‘If you have five apples and give two away, how many do you have left?’”
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.”
“So what's the answer?”
Daniel thought for a moment.
“Five.”
His mother frowned.
“No. If you have five apples and give two away, you have three left.”
Daniel shook his head.
“Not if I don't want to give them away.”
His mother stared at him.
“That's not how the question works.”
Daniel picked up his pencil.
“Then it's a badly written question.”
His mother couldn't argue with that logic.
3. The Bedtime Negotiation
Every night, Michael's mother told him the same thing.
“It's bedtime.”
And every night, Michael had a new reason why he couldn't go to sleep.
One evening, he said, “I'm not tired.”
His mother replied, “You were yawning five minutes ago.”
“I'm not tired anymore.”
“Go to bed.”
“But I'm thirsty.”
She gave him some water.
He drank it.
“Now I'm hungry.”
She gave him a small snack.
He ate it.
“Now I need to use the bathroom.”
His mother sighed.
“Fine. Go.”
He returned a few minutes later.
“Now what?”
Michael looked at her seriously.
“I need to ask you something important.”
“What?”
“Why do adults always tell children to go to sleep when they are the ones who stay awake watching television?”
His mother paused.
Michael smiled.
“I think I have discovered a family secret.”
