Three Times I Was Confidently Wrong About What Was Going On

1. The Restaurant Reservation

I walked into a restaurant and told the host, “I have a reservation.”

He asked, “What name?”

I confidently gave him my name.

He searched the computer.

Nothing.

He searched again.

Still nothing.

He asked, “Are you sure it’s for today?”

“Absolutely,” I said. “I made it myself.”

He checked the date.

Then he looked at me and said, “Your reservation is for tomorrow.”

I laughed and said, “Of course. I knew that.”

He smiled politely.

Then he asked, “Would you like to stay anyway?”

I said yes.

Apparently, being confidently wrong is much easier when someone has a table available.

2. The Mysterious Noise

One night, I heard a strange noise coming from my kitchen.

It was a steady scratching sound.

I froze.

My imagination immediately decided there was an animal living inside the wall.

I grabbed a flashlight and began investigating like I was starring in a low-budget detective movie.

I checked behind the refrigerator.

Nothing.

I looked under the cabinets.

Nothing.

I even opened the pantry very slowly, because apparently burglars and mysterious creatures both respect dramatic entrances.

Finally, I found the source.

It was a plastic bag sitting on top of the refrigerator.

The air conditioner was blowing it gently against the wall.

I stood there in silence for a moment.

Then I said, “You had me worried.”

The plastic bag, naturally, refused to apologize.

3. The Important Email

I received an email from my boss that said:

“Can you come by my office when you have a minute?”

That was it.

No explanation.

My brain immediately went into overdrive.

I wondered if I had made a mistake, missed a deadline, or accidentally sent something to the wrong person.

By the time I walked into the office, I had mentally prepared three explanations, two apologies, and one resignation speech.

My boss looked up and said, “Do you know where the stapler is?”

I stared at him.

“The stapler?”

“Yes. You had it yesterday.”

I pointed toward the supply cabinet.

“It’s in there.”

He said, “Thanks.”

I walked back to my desk.

Apparently, I had spent ten minutes preparing for the end of my career because someone needed office supplies.

I've never been so relieved to be involved in a stapler investigation.
