The Everyday Struggles Nobody Warned Us About

1. The Perfect Toast

I decided to make breakfast before work, so I put two slices of bread in the toaster and walked away for a moment.

I was feeling very efficient.

Then I smelled something burning.

I rushed back to the kitchen and pulled out the toast.

It was completely black.

No problem. I had more bread.

I put two fresh slices in and watched them carefully this time.

The toast popped up perfectly golden.

I smiled.

Finally, breakfast was going according to plan.

Then I reached for the butter.

It was rock solid.

I tried spreading it anyway.

The toast immediately tore apart.

I stared at the two pieces in my hand.

Apparently, making toast isn't difficult. It's the butter that has been running the whole operation.

2. The Missing Charger

My phone battery was down to 3%, so I urgently needed my charger.

I knew I had left it somewhere in the house.

I checked the bedroom.

Nothing.

I checked the living room.

Nothing.

I checked the kitchen counter.

Still nothing.

I started searching drawers and looking under furniture.

After 15 minutes, I finally found it.

It was plugged into the wall right beside my chair.

I had walked past it at least six times.

I plugged my phone in and felt relieved.

Then my phone displayed a message:

“Charging slowly.”

I looked at the charger.

It was the wrong charger.

I spent 15 minutes finding a charger that couldn't even do the one job I needed it to do.

3. The Leftovers

I opened the refrigerator and found a container of leftovers.

I couldn't remember when we'd cooked them, but they looked perfectly fine.

I asked my wife, “When did we make this?”

She said, “I'm not sure.”

I asked my son.

He said, “I think last week.”

I looked at the container again.

Last week didn't sound particularly reassuring.

I checked the food carefully and decided it probably wasn't worth the risk.

So I threw it away.

Five minutes later, I was hungry again.

I opened the refrigerator.

There was nothing ready to eat.

I stared at the empty shelf and remembered the leftovers I'd just thrown away.

They had suddenly become very appealing.

Nothing makes yesterday's questionable dinner look delicious quite like being hungry today.
