1. The Free Shipping Trap

I decided I was going to become much smarter about online shopping.

No more impulse purchases. No more buying things just because they were on sale. From now on, I would only buy what I actually needed.

That plan lasted until I found a kitchen gadget I genuinely needed.

It was only $8.

I added it to my cart and went to check out.

Then I saw the shipping fee.

“Absolutely not,” I said. “I'm not paying $6 to ship an $8 item.”

So I looked around the website for something else to bring my order up to the amount needed for free shipping.

Twenty minutes later, I had bought $47 worth of things I didn't need.

I saved $6 on shipping.

Financial experts may call that poor decision-making.

I call it winning at checkout.

2. The Cheap Coffee

I decided to save money by making coffee at home instead of buying it every morning.

I bought a bag of expensive coffee beans, a grinder, a fancy reusable cup, and one of those little machines that looks like it belongs in a professional café.

I did the math.

After a few weeks, I proudly announced that my homemade coffee was costing me less than a dollar a cup.

My friend asked, “How much did all that equipment cost?”

I paused.

Then I said, “We're not talking about the past. We're talking about the savings.”

Apparently, I had saved approximately 87 cents on coffee while spending enough money to open a small café.

But at least now I can afford to make terrible coffee professionally.

3. The Repair Attempt

My phone charger stopped working, and I decided not to waste money replacing it.

“I can fix this,” I said.

I watched a tutorial online, found some electrical tape, and spent nearly an hour carefully repairing the cable.

When I finished, I plugged it in.

Nothing.

I tried another outlet.

Still nothing.

I tried turning the phone off and on again, because apparently that's the official solution to every problem in modern life.

Still nothing.

Eventually, I gave up and bought a new charger.

The new charger cost $15.

The repair attempt had cost me two hours, a roll of tape, a mild headache, and several moments where I questioned my qualifications as an adult.

So technically, I didn't waste money on the repair.

I just spent my time making the $15 charger feel more expensive.
