Recognising the Hand of God
Have you ever looked back on a situation and realised that what seemed like an ordinary opportunity was actually an extraordinary expression of God’s kindness?
Perhaps a door opened through an unexpected person. Maybe someone in authority showed you favour when you had no reason to expect it. Or perhaps, in a moment when you felt inadequate, courage arose within you to do something you could not have accomplished through confidence alone.
What do we do when we recognise that God has been working behind the scenes?
Ezra shows us.
His response was not to take personal credit, celebrate his own influence, or treat the king’s favour as a product of human achievement. Instead, he immediately praised the Lord and acknowledged that God’s good hand was the source of the favour and courage he received.
This is the central truth of Ezra 7:27–28:
God’s gracious hand works through circumstances and people to accomplish His purposes, and recognising His hand should lead us to praise Him and courageously participate in His work.
From the King’s Heart to God’s Praise
Ezra begins with worship:
“Praise be to the LORD, the God of our ancestors…”
This response becomes even more meaningful when we consider the setting.
Ezra was a priest and teacher of the Law who lived during the period when the Jewish people were returning from exile and rebuilding their life of worship in Jerusalem. The temple had been rebuilt, but the restoration of the community required more than physical structures. God's people needed spiritual instruction, renewed obedience, and leadership shaped by His Word.
In the preceding verses, King Artaxerxes had granted Ezra permission and resources to support the temple and strengthen worship in Jerusalem. From a human perspective, this was a remarkable political development. A Persian king had shown concern for the house of the Lord and made provision for its ministry.
But Ezra looked beyond the visible circumstances.
He understood that God had “put it into the king’s heart” to honour the Lord’s house.
This does not mean Ezra ignored the king’s actions or failed to appreciate the people involved. Rather, he recognised that God's sovereign goodness was at work through human decisions.
The king acted, but God deserved the praise.
That perspective protects our hearts from misplaced confidence. When help comes through an employer, a government official, a friend, a family member, or an unexpected opportunity, we can appreciate the person without forgetting the God who remains Lord over every circumstance.
Grace That Deserves Recognition
Ezra also praised God because He had “extended his good favour” toward him before the king, his advisers, and powerful officials.
Notice the personal nature of Ezra’s gratitude.
He was not merely celebrating a national development. He recognised God's kindness toward him in the responsibilities he had been given.
Ezra understood that standing before influential people and receiving their support was not something to treat casually. The favour he experienced was an expression of God's gracious provision for the work entrusted to him.
There is something spiritually healthy about learning to identify God's kindness in specific details.
Sometimes we thank God for His goodness in general but fail to recognise the particular ways He has helped us:
The wisdom that arrived when we needed to make a difficult decision.
The person who offered assistance at the right moment.
The opportunity to serve that we could not have arranged ourselves.
The strength to continue when the responsibility felt overwhelming.
Gratitude becomes deeper when it becomes attentive.
Ezra did not allow God's provision to become ordinary in his eyes.
Courage That Follows Gratitude
The passage moves naturally from praise to action:
“Because the hand of the LORD my God was on me, I took courage and gathered leaders from Israel to go up with me.”
This is a beautiful progression.
Ezra recognised God's hand, praised God's goodness, and then received courage to move forward.
His gratitude was not passive. It strengthened his willingness to obey.
The phrase “the hand of the LORD my God was on me” expresses God's active favour and enabling presence in Ezra's mission. Ezra was not claiming that the journey would be effortless or that every difficulty had disappeared. He was acknowledging that God's gracious involvement gave him reason to act with courage.
And what did that courage produce?
He gathered leaders from Israel to return with him.
Ezra's confidence in God's hand became a willingness to involve others in the work of restoration.
This is important because genuine dependence on God does not lead us away from responsibility. It moves us toward it.
When we understand that God is graciously at work, we do not need to wait until every uncertainty disappears before taking the next faithful step.
An Illustration: The Open Door and the Next Step
Imagine a person who has been asked to lead a meaningful project that will benefit others. The opportunity came through someone in authority who recognised their abilities and offered support.
They could respond in two ways.
They might say, “I earned this. My connections and abilities made it happen.”
Or they might say, “I am grateful for the people involved, but I also recognise God's kindness in opening this opportunity. Now I must serve faithfully.”
The second response does not deny preparation, skill, or human involvement. It places everything within a larger perspective of gratitude and stewardship.
That is the posture we see in Ezra.
He did not stop at recognising favour. He gathered leaders and moved forward.
God's grace was not an excuse for inactivity; it became the foundation for courageous obedience.
What This Means for Us Today
Ezra's response invites us to examine how we interpret the good things that happen in our lives.
When God provides help, do we recognise His hand?
When doors open, do we remember His goodness?
When we receive favour, do we respond with humility rather than self-importance?
And when God gives us opportunities to serve, do we allow gratitude to strengthen our courage?
Perhaps you have been praying about a responsibility that now lies before you. Maybe you have received support for something God has placed on your heart, but you feel uncertain about taking the next step.
Ezra's example reminds us to look carefully at God's faithfulness.
You do not need to manufacture confidence by pretending every challenge is small. Instead, you can remember the ways God has already shown His kindness and allow that remembrance to encourage faithful action.
This does not mean every opportunity is automatically God's approval of our plans. Ezra's confidence was rooted in a clearly defined work connected to God's covenant purposes and the restoration of worship in Jerusalem.
For us, gratitude must likewise be joined with wisdom, obedience to Scripture, and a sincere desire to honour God.
The question is not simply, “Has something good happened to me?”
It is also, “How can I respond to God's goodness in a way that honours Him?”
Christ-Centred Perspective: Grace That Moves Us to Serve
Ezra's experience points us toward a greater reality fulfilled in Jesus Christ.
Through Christ, we see God's grace most clearly—not merely in favourable circumstances, but in God's saving work for His people.
We do not approach God because we have earned His kindness. We come through the grace revealed in Jesus, whose life, death, and resurrection demonstrate God's mercy and faithfulness.
And that grace is not intended to leave us spiritually inactive.
As those who have received mercy through Christ, we are called to respond with grateful lives, willing hearts, and faithful service.
Ezra praised God for His good hand and then gathered people for the work ahead. In a similar spirit, believers today can recognise God's grace and respond by serving Him and strengthening others.
Our confidence rests not in our abilities or in the favour of powerful people, but in the God whose grace sustains His purposes.
A Grateful Heart, A Courageous Life
Ezra 7:27–28 gives us a simple but profound pattern:
Recognise God's hand. Praise His goodness. Take courage for faithful service.
The next time you experience unexpected help, pause before rushing past it.
Thank God specifically.
When you face a responsibility that seems larger than your strength, remember His faithfulness without assuming that obedience will always be easy.
And when you have an opportunity to serve, do not let fear silence your willingness.
God's goodness deserves recognition, and His grace gives us reason to move forward with courage.
You may not understand every circumstance surrounding your life today. But you can cultivate the same posture Ezra displayed: a heart that sees God's kindness, a mouth that praises Him, and a life willing to participate in His work.
The hand that deserves your praise is also the grace that gives you courage to serve.

Dear friend, do not overlook the quiet evidence of God's kindness in your life. The help you received, the favour you experienced, and the strength that carried you may all be reminders to pause and praise Him.
You do not have to face today's responsibilities by relying entirely on your own confidence. Remember God's faithfulness, thank Him for His grace, and take the next step of obedience with a willing heart.

Heavenly Father,
Praise be to You, the God of our ancestors, whose faithfulness continues from generation to generation.
Thank You for Your gracious hand and for the many ways You work through circumstances and people to accomplish Your purposes. Forgive us for the times we overlook Your kindness or take credit for what Your grace has made possible.
Teach us to recognise Your goodness with attentive and grateful hearts. When You provide opportunities to honour You, help us respond with humility. When responsibilities seem difficult, remind us of Your faithfulness and give us courage to obey.
Like Ezra, may our gratitude lead us beyond words into willing service. Help us to encourage others, use the opportunities You provide wisely, and remain committed to honouring Your name.
