Everyday Confidence Has Its Limits

1. The Self-Checkout Expert

I went to the supermarket and decided to use the self-checkout because there was a long line at the regular registers.

I watched the person in front of me carefully.

They scanned an item, placed it in the bagging area, and moved on.

Easy.

When it was my turn, I felt completely confident.

I scanned my first item.

The machine said, “Unexpected item in bagging area.”

I moved the item.

“Please place item in bagging area.”

I placed it back.

“Unexpected item in bagging area.”

After several attempts, an employee came over and fixed it in about three seconds.

I thanked her and continued scanning.

Then the machine asked me to choose my payment method.

I selected card.

It said, “Please remove card.”

I hadn't even inserted it yet.

2. The Laundry Mystery

I finally decided to organize my laundry properly.

I separated everything into whites, darks, and colors.

I checked the labels, measured the detergent, and selected the correct wash cycle.

I felt like I had completely mastered adulthood.

When the washing machine finished, I opened it and pulled everything out.

One sock was missing.

I searched inside the machine.

Nothing.

I checked the floor.

Nothing.

I checked the laundry basket.

Still nothing.

I eventually gave up and put the remaining clothes in the dryer.

A few minutes later, I heard something rattling.

I opened the dryer.

There was the missing sock.

I stared at it.

It had somehow traveled from the washing machine to the dryer without ever being in the laundry I was actually moving.

3. The Password Problem

I decided to make my online accounts more secure, so I created a strong new password.

It had uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, symbols, and absolutely no connection to anything in my life.

I was very proud of myself.

Then I logged out and tried to log back in.

I couldn't remember the password.

I tried several guesses.

Nothing worked.

I clicked “Forgot password?”

The website asked me to enter my old password first.

I stared at the screen for a long time.

Finally, I reset it using an email verification code.

Then the website asked me to create a new password.

I used the same complicated password again.
