THE POWER OF 40 DAYS
WHY GOD MAKES YOU GO THE LONG WAY
HIS MYSTERIOUS LEADING PROVES WISER THAN OUR IMPATIENT PLEAS FOR PROGRESS
The Power of 40 Days: Why God Takes You the Long Way
Have you ever asked yourself, “Who am I? What are my talents? What is my purpose?”
Sometimes, the answers don’t come quickly—or easily. But throughout Scripture, there’s a sacred rhythm that shows up again and again: forty days.
Forty days of waiting. Forty days of wrestling. Forty days of preparation.
God has given us each a destiny, but He rarely rushes us toward it. Instead, He invites us to slow down and walk with Him—even if the path feels longer than we planned. And there’s a reason for that.
Because 40 days doesn’t just mean time... it means growth.
Sometimes the Shortest Way Is the Long Way
We live in a world that values speed—same-day delivery, one-click solutions, microwave success. So when God takes us the long way around, it can feel wrong. Frustrating. Even cruel.
But what if the long way isn’t punishment… but protection?
The Israelites’ journey from Egypt to the Promised Land should’ve taken only days. Yet we know it took them 40 years. While much of that delay was caused by disobedience, it’s important to see what happened at the very beginning:
“When Pharaoh let the people go, God did not lead them on the road through the Philistine country, though that was shorter. For God said, ‘If they face war, they might change their minds and return to Egypt.’ So God led the people around by the desert road…”
—Exodus 13:17–18 (NIV)
God intentionally led them on the longer path—not because He was lost, but because they weren’t ready.
God’s Detours Are His Deliverance
God knew the Israelites weren’t prepared to face battle. If they encountered war too early, they might go back to slavery. He wasn’t just getting them out of Egypt—He was getting Egypt out of them.
And He does the same for us.
What you may see as a detour might actually be divine strategy. Sometimes, the long way isn’t about the destination—it’s about the transformation.
You wanted a straight path to the promise, but God sees the danger you can’t.
You wanted speed. God wanted strength.
You wanted answers. God wanted alignment.
And so, He leads us by the longer road.
What Delay Might Really Mean
We call it “delay.”
God calls it “development.”
We get frustrated with unanswered prayers, closed doors, and seasons that seem to stretch longer than expected. But many times, God is doing deep work in hidden places—healing us, strengthening us, reshaping our hearts so that when we arrive, we’re ready.
“God is not primarily concerned with how fast you reach the promise. He is concerned with who you are when you arrive.”
This is the truth most of us miss. We see the wait as wasted time. But with God, no waiting season is ever wasted.
The Growth Hidden in 40 Days
God never wastes 40 days.
In Scripture, the number 40 represents testing, preparation, and transformation.
-
Moses spent 40 days on Mount Sinai—and returned glowing with God’s presence.
-
Elijah walked 40 days to Mount Horeb—and heard the voice of the Lord.
-
Jesus fasted 40 days in the wilderness—and stepped into His public ministry.
They all entered one way… and came out another. Changed. Strengthened. Ready.
When God brings you into a season of “40,” it’s not a punishment. It’s not rejection.
It’s preparation.
It’s construction.
It’s love.
You may feel like you’re in a wilderness, waiting for breakthrough. But this season is not in vain. This is where the roots go deep.
This is where old habits die and faith gets real.
This is where the version of you that can carry the promise is born.
Reflection
Could the delay in your life actually be God’s mercy?
Are you interpreting protection as punishment?
What if the wilderness is where God is building the strength you’ll need to walk into your future?
You’re not behind. You’re not lost.
You’re being formed.
When God takes you the long way, it’s never to harm you—it’s to prepare you.
For victory. For stewardship. For spiritual authority.
So don’t despise the long road.
Don’t despise the 40.
This is where transformation happens.
Let this be your invitation:
Wait well. Trust deep. Grow strong.
The long way isn’t the wrong way.
It’s God’s way.
And He’s leading you in love.
🌿 40 Days Means Growth
God doesn’t waste time.
And He especially doesn’t waste forty days.
Throughout Scripture, when God takes someone through a 40-day journey, it’s never about punishment—it’s about preparation.
When Jesus went into the wilderness for 40 days, He didn’t come out the same. He entered as a carpenter; He came out as a man walking in divine authority.
When Moses climbed the mountain for 40 days, he wasn’t just collecting stone tablets—he was being transformed in the presence of God.
And when Elijah ran for his life, 40 days later he stood face-to-face with the voice of the Lord.
Each time, the 40 days were about growth.
Growth in faith.
Growth in clarity.
Growth in surrender.
Growth in power.
You may feel like you’re in a wilderness.
Like things are taking longer than they should.
But what feels like a delay is often God's way of developing you.
Don’t despise the 40.
This is where roots go deep.
This is where old habits die and faith gets real.
This is where the version of you that can carry the promise is born.
God is not just getting you to the next thing.
He’s growing you into the person who can handle it.
